Fruit Smasher Series, 2024

Photographs of family, plaster, chicken wire, and various apparatuses

In the “Fruit Smasher” works, I contend with the unromantic realities and stereotypes of the nuclear family. In these works, I have cut up and re-combined photographs of my skin, my husband’s skin and our son’s skin to cover the surfaces tools that can supposedly be used to prepare fruit. These works reflect the loss of autonomy that one faces in monogamy and child-rearing. In these works, the family is a de-individuated unit and tool. Though the sculptures are presented as useful kitchen appliances with brightly colored steel components and simple kinetic actions, the imagined effect of their use is rough and unappetizing.
